How much money can I get from scholarships and bursaries?

We know, we know, we know - this is the question you’re here for, reading this article. So the annoying but honest answer: it depends.

How much can I get from a scholarship?

Some scholarships may be as low as $5, 10, 100 but others can be for as much as $100,000. Some don’t have a specific value and are listed as “cover tuition for X terms”, “cover housing for X months”, or a combination of both. Generally, academic institutions will offer academic scholarships for every (at University of Waterloo, 85-90% grade range will get you a $1,000 scholarship, 90-95% will be $2,000, and 95%-100% is $5,000).

Remember! Academic scholarships are not the only type of awards. There are a ton of scholarships available. For example the STEAM Horizons Scholarship ($25,000), Terry Fox Humanitarian Award ($28,000), Lloyd Carr Harris Foundation Scholarship ($70,000), and LORAN Scholarship ($100,000) are excellent choices that are funded by external providers and are based on leadership skills and extracurricular involvement.

How much can I get from a bursary?

Bursaries are given based on needs and other . For instance, the Ontario First Generation Bursary ($1,000-$3,500) is for students whose parents have never attended post-secondary studies and require financial support to attend a public college or university. Trent University offers the Athletic Entrance Bursary ($500 or more) to entering varsity athletes with a demonstrated financial need. If you’re going to Vancouver Island University, look into the massive $20,000 bursary from Wealthsimple Foundation! Don’t forget -  the government of Canada will give students from modest income families (household income of < $50,197) the Canada Learning Bond, a $500 - $2,000 grant that is yours to pay for school

Can I receive multiple scholarships and bursaries at once?

You can! For smaller scholarships, you can apply and receive multiple at the same time. However, scholarships larger than $15,000 generally have more strings - and could potentially limit the other scholarships you can collect. Every scholarship is different, so we recommend that you check with your scholarship provider, administrator, or donor before you accept!

Where can I find scholarships and bursaries?

Scholarships are very accessible for students. You can find them through community sites, university admission pages, or on your school board’s website. Scholarship Canada, GrantMe, and ScholarTree are just a few examples to get you started.

What are the chances of me winning?

Although there are many students out there applying for scholarships, many scholarships and bursaries actually end up without any applicants. Also, with so many different scholarships available there is no reason to be discouraged - apply! It might seem like a hassle to spend hours on an application without any guarantee, but it’s worth it for the potential of saving tens of thousands of dollars on tuition and student living costs.

You’ve got what it takes! Good luck!
